IVAW's humanitarian aid mission to Basra, Iraq
Late January to early February of 2011. The exact dates are being kept confidential due to security reasons
The group will travel throughout Basra, Iraq to meet with the people of Iraq from homes to refugee camps.
As the Obama administration ends the formal occupation of Iraq, the horrors of war still hangs over the heads of the Iraqi people. This January/February a group representing both American veterans and Iraqi's will bring some of the humanitarian aid that is desperately needed in Basra, Iraq. The group plans on bringing medical supplies and other necessitates that will be used in the city of Basra to help heal the wounds of the war.
Since the beginning of the US occupation the people of Basra often only have a couple of hours of electricity and very low amounts of clean running water. There has also been a 242% jump in cancer rates since 1991. The group plans to help alleviate, even if just by a fraction, the suffering of Iraqi's under US occupation.
The war is not over but it is not the same as it was in years past. With a dire humanitarian situation in Iraq IVAW hopes to alleviate just a small sliver of the great suffering the Iraqi people are experiencing because of the invasion and occupation. While doing this work IVAW hopes to build new relationships with Iraqis built upon equality not occupation.
The delegation includes:
Geoff Millard (IVAW)
Hart Viges (IVAW)
Haider Al-Saedy (Iraqi Health Now)
Richard Rowely (Big Noise Films)
