I have been thinking about, reflecting on and wrestling with my one deployment to Iraq in 2004 for the last decade. I had adopted a way of conceptualizing the world through a false binary, in which the U.S. military was always the protector of the 'good' while perceived threats were easily and broadly painted as 'evil.' As I have been in seminary at Brite Divinity school, in Fort Worth Texas, I have reflected on my military service with an even more critical eye - trying to reconcile theologically what a just world actually looks like compared to the violent world we actually perpetuate. For these reasons, I am an Iraq veteran against war.
