Crystal Cravens

My name is Crystal Michelle, I am currently residing in Colorado. I was in the US Army from 2005-2009. I did not deploy, however my spouse at that time did deploy. I have one son named Noah who is 7 years old and is autistic. My time in service was relatively uneventful. My experiences were mainly in support of my husband, who hated everything about war, but was willing to go for our family. He came back, badly affected, and crumbling from PTSD. After getting a divorce, I began struggling deeply with depression, and anxiety. Raising a child on my own, was not easy, and I seemed to be facing adversity in every turn in my life. I battled harshly with addiction, and self-loathing. I was finally able to get control of my life this past year. I became active in my community. I started by hosting a prayer vigil, remembering the lives of those lost to police brutality. I then partook in a Black Lives Matter demonstration. Later I did a rally to counter Donald Trump visiting UCCS, and have been active in countering any messages of hate. I joined IVAW because I saw that there were other individuals who were passionate about bringing attention to issues in the world, our country, our communities, and in our lives. I want to be an active member, and always participate in what is happening. I am humbled and honored to be a member of this wonderful community of heroes. I will always use my voice to bring attention and awareness to issues affecting, minorities, marginalized groups of people and people who maybe are afraid to fight for themselves. My willingness to be present and protecting the rights of my fellow human did not merely stop when that uniform came off and I unlaced those boots. My willingness to protect and serve has always, and will always be present.
