Cameron White
Cameron is a Minnesota native who served two deployments in Iraq. He was a Marine Corps tank mechanic with the 1st Tank Battalion during the invasion of Iraq. On his second tour, he functioned as a Humvee driver attached to the 1st Marine Division, tasked with transporting troops from Kuwait to Fallujah. Disillusioned by what was so clearly an illegal war, he became actively involved in the peace movement (though still on active duty) as part of a performance art piece called "The Fifth Commandment." Upon his discharge he joined the North Dakota Peace Coalition and testified in the North Dakota Senate and House of Representatives in support of North Dakota Senate Concurrent Resolution 4022. The resolution, dubbed the "Peace Resolution," called for the state to sponsor an end to the war and a withdrawal of the troops. The bill passed and was adopted by the state.
Cameron now resides in Los Angeles and is an active member of the LA chapter. In 2007 he walked across the U.S.-Mexican border in New Mexico on a peace pilgrimage with Zen Buddhist monk Claude AnShin Thomas. (AnShin is a Vietnam Veteran, Zen Buddhist Monk, and author of "At Hell's Gates: A Soldier's Journey from War to Peace.") Some of Cameron's letters from the war were featured in Frank Schaeffer's book "Voices from the Front." In 2007 he was also the keynote speaker for the North Dakota Peace Coalition's annual Peace Conference. In addition to his work within the peace movement, Cameron has also served as a Department Service Officer with the Disabled American Veterans in Los Angeles and sat on the Greater Los Angeles VA OEF/OIF Steering Committee. He has also worked for and volunteers with the National Veterans Foundation. Currently he is in forming a 501(c)3 to offer veterans alternative forms of therapy and healing, such as meditation, yoga, and art. Cameron has also participated in fundraising with the Marine Corps Veterans Association, the largest contributor to the Semper Fi Injured Marine Fund. Currently he works in the California Community College system where he has successfully helped veterans, low income and minority students gain access to mentorship programs and higher education.
