I am an Iraq war vet that has gone threw hell since i was discharged. I recieved two owi's back to back a month from returning home in 2008 from Iraq. I was kicked from service without help and now am living with family, received another owi, but still havn't recieved any compensation or help from the VA. It is 2013 I have no license living at home I have two daughters, that rely on me soley. The county I live in has a Veteran intervention program for vets in the criminal courts system, that helps in getting a mentor and a program to alcohol dependant vets, instead of the alternative Prison. But for some reason I who has served as a combat engineer in combat zone for 15 months and who has earned a cab from multiple engagments including 2 IEDs, and that has been drinking heavily from the day i got back to the day of my last owi, don't fit the criteria for some reason. Moreoff I have spent about 20000 in lawyers and court ordered alcohol monitoring for almost two years, and in the same two years been fighting the court in a heated battle, that hasn't gone anywhere. I have now been sober for one year and five months, I have a good job that is in limbo about not having a license, i've also been waiting for an appeal decision on ptsd from the VA for 2 years and five months. There is no reason why I was discharged from the Army without any emmotional help, that was the start of my lifes demise.
