Independence Day Message from Tom Morello

published by Joyce Wagner on 07/03/14 5:37pm
"For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."  - Nelson Mandela

Dear Friend,

Tomorrow, many people in the United States will celebrate their independence, but Independence Day in this country has always raised a lot of questions for me. Are we truly independent? And if so, at whose expense? These are exactly the kinds of questions that have led US soldiers, sailors, and marines out of the military and into Iraq Veterans Against the War, and this is why I have been supporting them for the past 10 years.

Join me - be a part of a movement to end US Militarism in our streets, our country, and our world. Make a contribution to IVAW today.

There is nothing more corageous than a soldier willing to stand up against an unjust war. While most veterans' organizations will talk about victories and conquests, IVAW will remind us that more than a million people have been displaced in the Middle East because of US military operations. Our government continues to ignore their demand for accountability, and instead threatens airstrikes and other forms of escalation and terror. This is why IVAW continues to be so important.

We must challenge assumptions, and we must listen to the voices of those who were there and who continue to follow though with their commitment to the freedom of those living under the threat of US militarism. Let's make a commitment to IVAW. As long as Iraqis are living under the gun, as long as soldiers are dying for the profit of corporations, and as long as our government fails to be held to account, none of us are free.

Let's change that. Join me in supporting the work of IVAW. Donate today.

In Solidarity,

Tom Morello Musician, Activist, and IVAW Supporter

Statement on the 12th Anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq

They Suffer Still: The Children of Iraq

Recently I have seen an increase in news reports on Iraqi children being murdered, abused, or enslaved by ISIS members. I do not read these articles, because the titles alone tear at my heart. The children I saw in Iraq...

I Hate: A Poem

I wrote this poem this morning after trying to fill out even more VA Compensation paperwork and seeing one too many commercials for preventing veteran suicide and for the new film "American Sniper". Life just becomes so...

From Our Founding to Our Future

When I returned from Iraq ten years ago, some of my most vivid memories were of pointing my rifle at men and boys while my fellow soldiers burned semi trucks of food and fuel, and of watching the raw grief of a family...

Why?

While (I was) deployed as a sniper in the US Army 1st Infantry Division in the Diyala River Valley in Iraq I authored a mil-blog with a group of soldiers that started to turn against the mission. The blog was called “Fight...
