Independence Day Message from Tom Morello

published by Joyce Wagner on 07/03/14 5:37pm
"For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."  - Nelson Mandela

Dear Friend,

Tomorrow, many people in the United States will celebrate their independence, but Independence Day in this country has always raised a lot of questions for me. Are we truly independent? And if so, at whose expense? These are exactly the kinds of questions that have led US soldiers, sailors, and marines out of the military and into Iraq Veterans Against the War, and this is why I have been supporting them for the past 10 years.

Join me - be a part of a movement to end US Militarism in our streets, our country, and our world. Make a contribution to IVAW today.

There is nothing more corageous than a soldier willing to stand up against an unjust war. While most veterans' organizations will talk about victories and conquests, IVAW will remind us that more than a million people have been displaced in the Middle East because of US military operations. Our government continues to ignore their demand for accountability, and instead threatens airstrikes and other forms of escalation and terror. This is why IVAW continues to be so important.

We must challenge assumptions, and we must listen to the voices of those who were there and who continue to follow though with their commitment to the freedom of those living under the threat of US militarism. Let's make a commitment to IVAW. As long as Iraqis are living under the gun, as long as soldiers are dying for the profit of corporations, and as long as our government fails to be held to account, none of us are free.

Let's change that. Join me in supporting the work of IVAW. Donate today.

In Solidarity,

Tom Morello Musician, Activist, and IVAW Supporter

Preparing to give a talk to the Stop the War coalition in the UK, I’ve reflected on 15 years of war. I spent the first five years in the military and most of the time since then working to transform our militaristic society...

Iraq Veterans Against the War Statement on Orlando Massacre

We grieve for those who lost their lives Sunday morning in a bigoted, hate-fueled attack in Orlando, Florida. People - mainly Latinx and Black people - were targeted and killed simply because they were members of the LGBTQ+...

From Right to Left, a Vets Perspective

Though it feels somewhat arrogant, I must begin by stating that I am a combat vet. I don’t speak about it often, and even then, only in small snippets. I don’t really feel a need to describe my experiences to others, as...
