Fall Internships in Media and Development at IVAW New York

IVAW is currently seeking interns in Fundraising & Development, Media & Public Relations, and New Media for Fall 2011. Applicants should send a cover letter and resume or C.V., along with two professional or academic references, to sarahedkins@ivaw.org. Include “Internship Application” in the subject line. Although this is an unaid internship, IVAW is willing to work with your college or university to provide academic credit. Meal stipends are provided on days worked 4+ hours; travel reimbursements are provided to interns working 40+ hours monthly.

Hours & Availability: The term of this internship is September 12 through December 16. Interns will work in our New York City office for approximately 12 hours per week; hours are flexible and will be set on a regular schedule arranged in agreement with the Internship Coordinator. Interns will be required to attend four Monday-evening discussion-based trainings on relevant issues, including Post traumatic Stress Disorder, Military Culture, and Middle East Foreign Policy.

Given the sensitive nature of our work, IVAW interns must not only sign a confidentiality agreement, but also demonstrate a willingness to work with and learn about veterans.

IVAW is an equal opportunity employer. No college degree is required. Military veterans are particularly encouraged to apply. Due to limited space, IVAW asks its interns to provide their own laptop computers. However, this requirement should not deter potential applicants without laptop access; solutions are available.

AnchorIVAW’s Fundraising & Development Intern will work closely with the internship coordinator and Philadelphia-based Development Director to support IVAW's individual fundraising efforts, aid in grant proposals, and improve and maintain donor database and communications.

Responsibilities: -Donation processing, including database entry, bank deposits, and producing thank-you letters; -Monthly update of form thank-you letter to reflect IVAW's current efforts and recent accomplishments; -Monthly donation reports for various fundraising campaigns and designations; -Database maintenance, including record deduplication, monitoring for inconsistencies, and troubleshooting organization-specific database needs; -Aid in the creation of comprehensive database usage manual; Filing, mailings, and other office tasks as necessary.

Qualifications: -Excellent writing, critical thinking, and "people" skills; -Strong time- and project- management; -Self-motivated, independent worker; -Interest in and experience with data management and Information Technology; -Attention to detail; Experience with database systems or CRM programs desirable (experience with Salsa Labs/Democracy in Action a plus)

AnchorIVAW’s New Media Intern will work closely with the internship coordinator webmaster, and Fort Hood-based Field Organizing team to maintain and monitor IVAW's social media presence, improve website appearance, and launch Operation Recovery listening project.

Responsibilities: -Use basic graphic design to create banners web banners and small ads; -Upload and adjust online video as necessary; -Use 3rd party services to generate SEO reports and incorporate feedback into web copy; -Mine Ft. Hood area social media community to invite potentially interested parties to get involved with Operation Recovery -Update facebook and other social media outlets with IVAW/Operation Recovery Events and news; -Edit blog posts as necessary; -Interview IVAW military contacts at Ft. Hood, edit and post audio for Operation Recovery listening project

Qualifications: -Strong social media presence and strategy comprehension; -Experience with graphic design, web development, and/or video editing; -Attention to detail; -Self-motivated, independent worker; -Strong Internet and computer skills.

AnchorIVAW’s Media & Public Relations Intern will work closely with the internship coordinator and member-run media messaging team to compile and archive press clippings, help with media outreach, and manage press contacts. The intern will also participate in weekly conference calls with the media team from 7:00 - 7:30pm on Thursday nights.

Responsibilities: -Create press kit for download on ivaw.org and distribution at events; -Aid in long-term scrub of existing press list; -Compile weekly press clippings and manage online archive of IVAW media hits utilizing Google alerts, D.O.D updates, and manual news scanning; -Edit media team-produced press releases, media advisories, and stories as requested; -Make pitch calls and reporter follow-up calls as necessary; -Manage postings of member content and significant news coverage to IVAW media webpage.

Qualifications: -Excellent writing skills -Attention to detail -Familiarity with media protocols or strong interest in Public Relations -Self-motivated; independent worker -Strong Internet and computer skills
