Still Serving with Pride
by Sholom Keller | Wed, 05/21/2008 - 4:37pm
Although we do have some members who have become disaffected over the course of their military careers, the majority of our membership take pride in having had the opportunity to serve our nation; this is especially so for our members who are still in the military. In fact, I don't even distinguish between my military service and my anti-war activism. I enlisted in the Army because I wanted to serve my nation, I wanted to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I was going to be a lifer, too. I loved the Army and took great pride in being assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, whose insignia is recognizable to anyone - even civilians. I joined Iraq Veterans Against the War for the same reason that I enlisted. We currently have a President and Congress who consistently subvert the Constitution, when they're not outright ignoring it. The war in Iraq violates the principles on which my beloved nation was founded, the principles fought for by the many brave and valiant warriors who have come before us. The oath I took when I enlisted does not have an expiration date; it is still my duty to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Especially domestic. I look forward to welcoming you into our ranks. |
