I joined the Florida National Guard in March 2002. I joined for many reason, but the root would have to be my desire to help those that need it. As my career progressed, I became a model soldier. I was actually pressured, if not forced, to participate in a battalion "Soldier Of The Year" competition, which I won. Even though I was never about the dog-and-pony show, I competed with pride and honor, which some how lead to out do my fellow soldiers. This accomplishment, along with my work ethic and promptness, gained me respect from the many people within my Battalion. However, all that ever really mattered was the respect I had for myself and that of my fellow soldiers. I was honest, respectful, and courageous. I still like to think of myself in that light. I served in (OEF) during 04-05. I went there a Bush loving Republican and came back a Bush loving Republican... Not so much today... :) See, I also came back with the feeling like I just got out of prison, and knew that what happened was not right. My experiences were based upon orders being sent down the chain to those that never acted with self-discipline, only self-glorification. It was fear that drove my leadership, and it was fear that they attempted to push on us. In most cases, the fear prevailed, and we did things that, looking back, I would have never done. It was this fear that also came back with me, and it is through my quest to lose that fear that I find myself speaking out and finding peace and happiness today. I am honored to be a part of Iraq Veterans Against The War. I consider all members to be an extended family. |
