I don't think my life story can be sufficiently summarized in this short a space, so I will go with the abridged version. I was a true believer, volunteering to enlist because I wanted to go to war, volunteering for every deployment that I could, even voluntarily extending my seven month tour to twelve once I made it to Iraq. My enthusiasm earned me multiple personal awards and a quick ascension through the ranks. I continued to be a true believer until I became a recruiter and was confronted with the reality of military service: the military is an organization populated by sycophants and sociopaths. That realization caused me to start questioning other "truths" I held about government and the military, and once I started reading about how this administration brought us to war and carried out this war I ceased to support the war. |
