Abe Cho

Abe is the Vice President of the Boston Chapter of the IVAW. He enlisted in the Marines at age seventeen and served with the 1st Marine Division. He has been deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and various other operations during his enlistment with the Marines, most notably serving in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and extending his tour of duty in Iraq to perform Phase IV Stabilization Operations in Iraq. His decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. After discharge in 2004, Abe attended college in New York, later moving to Boston. He is a magna cum laude graduate and was awarded the Scholar of the College for his class, also receiving the William A. Gamson Award from his department. He majored in Sociology and minored in Middle Eastern Islamic Studies. He wrote his dissertation on homeless veterans and their paths for reintegration, performing ethnography and interviews with various homeless veterans in and around Boston. He has worked with and/or performed research at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, the Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse in Roxbury, the Veterans Upward Bound at U Mass Boston, and at the Pine Street Inn Homeless Shelter in Roxbury. He currently attends law school in Boston, where he also resides.
